Superior Optical was founded in 1990 by industry veterans Jon Jacobs and Hal Walker. Hal is a service disabled veteran that spearheaded Superior's push into providing eyewear to the VA network, and managed that process for several years before retiring.
The current management team of Superior Optical is made up of highly experienced industry professionals that are dedicated to delivering their very best to our employees and customers. Derek Bodart, our president, continues the tradition of having a veteran in leadership. As a Service Disabled Navy Veteran, Derek is "all hands on deck" when it comes to the services we provide to our veteran customers.

Derek Bodart
President & CEO 228-875-3796Derek is a proud Veteran of the United States Navy, where he served eight years and was awarded the Southwest Asia Medal and the National Defense Medal for his service in a wartime theater. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Finance from the University of Illinois and an MBA from the University of South Florida.
Following his military service, Derek built a successful career in banking and pharmaceutical distribution, serving as a Director and Vice President within the industry. As a Service-Disabled Veteran, Derek brings a deeply personal commitment to his role at Superior Optical, where his primary focus is ensuring that fellow Veterans receive high-quality eyeglasses delivered accurately and in a timely manner.
Tony Jones
Vice-President & Chief Operating Officer 228-875-3796Tony brings nearly 25 years of experience across the biotech, pharmaceutical, medical supply, and molecular diagnostics industries, with a strong background in sales leadership and healthcare innovation. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Marketing Communications from Florida State University and an MBA from the University of South Florida.
At Superior Optical, Tony focuses on supporting the VA mission by ensuring Veterans have access to high-quality eyewear made with the most advanced products and technologies available in the optical industry. His experience leading teams in complex therapeutic areas reinforces his commitment to delivering reliable, forward-thinking solutions that enhance patient care for those who have served.
Braxton Walley
National Director Dispensary Services 228-875-3796 Braxton brings over 33 years of optical industry experience and a strong commitment to supporting the care of our nation’s Veterans. As National Director of Dispensary Services for the VA, he works hands-on with VA teams to ensure Veterans receive high-quality eyewear, efficient service, and the respect they deserve.
With a background as an Optician, Lab Manager, and Practice Manager, Braxton partners closely with dispensary staff, labs, and VA leadership to improve workflows, provide training, and support the mission of delivering exceptional eye care to those who have served.
James Moline
Optical District Manager VISN 6 828-450-5365James Moline is a native of Asheville, North Carolina, and brings over 15 years of experience in the optical industry with a strong dedication to serving Veterans and their families. He is a dual-licensed optician in North Carolina and Florida and holds American Board of Optometry (ABO) and National Contact Lens Examiners (NCLE) certifications.
A graduate of Western Carolina University with a degree in Biology and Chemistry, James currently serves as District Manager for VISN 6, supporting VA facilities across North Carolina and parts of Virginia and West Virginia. He works closely with VA teams to ensure consistent, high-quality optical services while upholding Superior Optical’s commitment to excellence, reliability, and Veteran-centered care.
